Wagner financier Yevgeny Prigozhin and co-founder Dmitry Utkin were killed in a plane crash on 23 August 2023, two months after Prigozhin's aborted June 2023 mutiny. Following his death the Wagner Group was technically disbanded and its functions absorbed by Russian state-backed structures: by the end of 2023 it had become 'marginalised' and 'de facto subordinated' to Russia's Defence Ministry, its Ukraine operations folded into the Volunteer Corps, covert/expeditionary operations into the Expeditionary Corps, and its Africa operations into the new Africa Corps (recruitment launched Nov-Dec 2023). It no longer functioned as a coherent, independent fighting force under its own command by 2023-12-31.
RUSI analysis: in the six months after Prigozhin's death Wagner was effectively dismantled as an independent actor, with the multibillion-dollar PMC business taken over by the Kremlin and operations rebranded under state-controlled corps ('Wagner 2.0'). Confirms loss of independent fighting-force status by end of 2023.
