Arthur Hayes
Co-founder and former CEO of BitMEX (inventor of the perpetual swap) and Chief Investment Officer of the Maelstrom family office; a prolific macro-crypto essayist who since February 2021 has published a roughly biweekly long-form essay (the "Crypto Trader Digest," on Medium as "Crypto Hayes" and cross-posted to Substack) packed with bold, datable Bitcoin/Ether price targets and monetary-policy timing calls, and a heavily-quoted guest across crypto podcasts, YouTube interviews and X, known for provocative, comedic, historically-referenced predictions that move market sentiment.

Crypto Hayes essay archive (Medium, 'Crypto Trader Digest')
Arthur Hayes's own long-form essay archive, published roughly every two weeks on Medium as 'Crypto Hayes' since February 2021 and cross-posted to his Substack from December 2022 onward. This is the single richest, primary, dated record of his Bitcoin and Ether price targets and his monetary-policy timing calls. The complete list of 111 essays was recovered from a public web archive of the Medium site, running from 'Walkaway' (Feb 18 2021) to 'Reality Test' (Jun 8 2026); the Substack side independently lists 76 of these (the December 2022 onward span). The 46 earliest essays (February 2021 through November 2022) exist only on Medium and must be pulled from there directly, because the deterministic newsletter collector only sees the Substack era.

- How we sampled
- The full list of 111 essays was enumerated from a public web archive of the Medium site and cross-checked against the Substack publication's own archive (76 posts). Because Hayes titles his essays with jokes and puns rather than descriptive headlines, matching titles against a broad forecast-word lexicon (will, won't, going to, expect, predict, forecast, bet, soon, imminent, coming, collapse, crash, boom, recession, surge, plunge, peak, top, bottom, cycle, target, price levels and dollar figures, and timing words like by-a-year / this-year / next / decade) flagged only 21 of the 111 essays. A random audit of the un-flagged remainder — five essays read in full — found that three of the five nonetheless contained at least one specific dated prediction the title had hidden, a miss rate around 60 percent. The clear implication, and the rule going forward, is that essentially every essay must be read rather than filtered by title; a title filter alone would recover only about a quarter of his forecasting record. Eight essays have been read in depth so far and confirm the archive is dense with datable, falsifiable calls (for example an explicit 'ETH north of $10,000 by year-end' target for 2022).
Crypto Trader Digest (Substack cross-post)
The same essays, cross-posted to Hayes's Substack newsletter (about 67,000 subscribers) from December 2022 onward. Its archive was listed exhaustively through the publication's own machine-readable index: 76 posts from 'PEMDAS' (Dec 9 2022) to 'Reality Test' (Jun 8 2026). This is the channel that can be collected in full automatically, and it covers everything from late 2022 on; it does not contain the 2021-through-late-2022 essays, which is why the Medium archive above is treated as the fuller universe.
- Total known

- 2022-12-09..2026-06-08
- How we sampled
- Every post in the Substack archive was enumerated (76 in total) via the publication's own paged archive index. The same forecast-word lexicon and the same read-everything conclusion from the Medium archive apply here, since these are the identical essays. A handful were read in depth to confirm the cross-post matches the Medium originals and that the whole publication is automatically collectible.
Podcast and video interview appearances (guest)
Hayes does not host his own channel or show; he appears as a frequent guest on crypto podcasts and YouTube interview programs (Bankless, Empire, CoinDesk, Unchained, Coin Bureau, Real Vision and others), where he repeats and updates dated price calls — for instance a '$250,000 Bitcoin by the end of 2025' target and a 'Bitcoin to $1 million by 2028' thesis tied to an expected AI-driven credit bust. Because there is no single channel to list, appearances were found by open search rather than enumerated; the count here is a floor, not a complete inventory.

- unknown (a floor; appearances found by open search, not a complete inventory)
- We examined
- 4
- Time span
- 2021-01-01..2026-06-30
- How we sampled
- Appearances were located by open search for Hayes interviews carrying explicit predictions across the major crypto shows. Where a published transcript or show notes quote him directly, his own words are used; where only a host or news recap paraphrases him, the statement is stored with its context and marked as relayed secondhand, to be traced to the original audio before it can count. No systematic show-by-show enumeration was performed because he guests across many programs rather than publishing on one.
X / @CryptoHayes trading bets
Hayes's X account carries crisp, unusually datable trading bets and short-horizon price calls in his own words — for example 'I bet BTC hits $110,000 before it retests $76,500' (March 2025) and 'gunning for sub $50k this weekend' (September 2024). These are among his most cleanly falsifiable statements. The account has not been enumerated exhaustively; individual high-signal posts were located via search and third-party retrospectives.

- unknown (not exhaustively enumerated; high-signal posts located via search)
- We examined
- 3
- Time span
- 2021-01-01..2026-06-30
- How we sampled
- High-signal dated bets were located through open search and a third-party accuracy retrospective, then pointed back at the original posts so his exact wording can be captured. The account's full timeline was not swept post by post; automated access to the platform's archive is limited, so this channel is sampled rather than exhaustive.
Open web search
Open search confirmed Hayes's headline dated calls and located third-party scorecards of his accuracy, which were used only as leads and traced back toward his own words. The picture that emerges is a very high-volume, high-conviction forecaster whose record lives overwhelmingly in his own biweekly essays, supplemented by crisp datable bets on X and repeated price targets in guest interviews. Coverage of the essays is broad in enumeration (every essay listed) but still shallow in depth (a minority read so far), and the interview and social calls are so far anchored mostly to recaps rather than primaries.
- His most-discussed and most-mocked calls and their resolutions ('was wrong about', 'predicted', accuracy scorecards) — traced back to his own essays, posts or interview audio
- Explicit Bitcoin and Ether price targets with dates ($250k by end-2025, $1M by 2028, year-end ETH targets) across essays, interviews and X
- Monetary-policy and liquidity timing calls (Fed pivots, money printing, stablecoin-driven liquidity) tied to crypto direction
- Real-time crisis calls (Terra/LUNA collapse, 2022 credit contagion, tether-solvency warnings) with dates
- Interview and podcast appearances carrying predictions (Bankless AI-bubble thesis, CoinDesk, Unchained, Coin Bureau)
Known gaps
The largest remaining gap is depth, not breadth of the essay archive: all 111 essays are listed, but only a small share have been read closely so far, and because Hayes's joke titles hide his predictions a title filter recovers only about a quarter of them — so the archive must be read essay by essay, and until it is, many specific price and timing calls (especially in the 2021-2022 essays that live only on Medium) are not yet captured. His interview and podcast predictions are currently held mostly as reputable recaps rather than the original audio, so their exact wording still needs to be traced to the source before they can count. His X trading bets are among his cleanest falsifiable calls but the account has not been swept post by post, so that channel is sampled rather than complete. A handful of his most famous targets ($1M Bitcoin by 2028, ETH out of the top three by 2030) have horizons that have not yet arrived and cannot contribute to a resolved score. Finally, his oldest writing under the BitMEX byline (pre-2021) was not systematically pulled and is a minor early gap.

Crypto (Bitcoin / total market cap) declines meaningfully in the window around the Jan 20, 2025 inauguration
Criterion: crypto declines meaningfully in the window around the Jan 20, 2025 inauguration. A clear inauguration-day reversal (~$109k → ~$102k, ~6%) plus a further late-January dip toward ~$98–100k occurred — directionally consistent with a sell-off — but it was a pullback from an all-time high rather than a sharp/sustained crash, with BTC holding near $100k through the 2025-01-31 deadline. Magnitude ('sharp' vs. moderate pullback) is the judgment left to scoring. Outcome value deferred to scoring.

On inauguration day 2025-01-20, BTC hit a new all-time high ~$109,000–$109,350 intraday then reversed sharply in a 'buy the rumor, sell the news' move, falling ~6% to ~$102,000–$103,558 the same session.
Crypto continued to slide in the following days, with BTC dipping to roughly ~$98k–$100.6k by late January / Feb 1, 2025 (a further leg down around Jan 27), though it did not collapse and remained near the $100k level.

Bitcoin enters a sustained bull-market uptrend beginning approximately July–October 2023.
A sustained bull-market uptrend did begin within the stated window, starting in the second half of October 2023 (early Q4). Nuance: the uptrend began near the very end of the criterion window (late October, right at the Oct 31 deadline) rather than in Q3 — July–September 2023 was flat-to-down (~$30k falling to ~$26k). The prediction's timing was directionally correct, catching the true kickoff of the 2023–2024 bull run only in the final ~two weeks. Outcome value (o) and scoring deferred to a later stage.

Bitcoin was rangebound near $30k in July 2023 and drifted down to ~$26k in Aug–Sep 2023, then surged in the second half of October 2023: it broke above $30k mid-month and rallied to a 17-month high of ~$35k on Oct 23–24 on spot-ETF approval expectations (BlackRock iShares Bitcoin Trust listed on DTCC). This late-Q3/early-Q4 move became the start of the sustained bull run that carried into the Jan 2024 ETF approval and new all-time highs in 2024 — matching the 'late Q3 or early Q4 2023' / 'approximately July–October 2023' window.
Bitcoin posted a ~27–28% gain in October 2023 (its strongest month since January), closing the month around $34,668, after hovering near $27k in the first half of October — the largest short-liquidation event of 2023 and the launch of the sustained uptrend.

Bitcoin trades within an $80,000-$100,000 range from the statement date until 2026-01-01.
Criterion: BTC trades within $80,000–$100,000 from statement date 2025-12-19 to 2026-01-01. Reported daily prices across that short window sit in the $80,000s (roughly $86k–$90k), never exceeding $100k and with no reported dip below $80,000 (lowest cited ~$86,684 on 2025-12-24). One 2025-12-25 analysis argued BTC 'might have to spend time below $80,000 to build support' — that is forward-looking and did not describe a breach within the window. Verification is based on reported daily/intraday levels, not tick-by-tick exchange data; an unreported intraday spike/dip outside the band cannot be fully excluded, but available evidence indicates the range held. resolved_on = window close 2026-01-01.

Bitcoin closed out 2025 near $87,000 ('limps into new year at $87,000, down ~30% from ATH'), ending the year in a narrow range — below $100k and above $80k across the statement-to-year-end window.
December 2025 price commentary: BTC capped below ~$90k, repeatedly failing to reclaim $90k, trading in a compressed range in the $80,000s — no sustained move above $100k.

The Fed resumes net balance-sheet expansion / QE-style asset purchases (beyond mere QT taper) at some point during 2025.
Criterion explicitly requires 'net balance-sheet expansion / QE-style asset purchases (beyond mere QT taper).' In 2025 the Fed ended QT (Dec 1) and shifted to reserve-management T-bill purchases to hold reserves stable — the balance sheet was flat-to-declining all year (~$6.5-6.9T), with no sustained net expansion and no QE program. The small week-over-week wiggle (+$3.5B in the Dec 10 week) is operational noise, not QE. The criterion's carve-out ('beyond mere QT taper') is exactly the distinction that fails here. Primary source is the Fed's own balance-sheet data (federalreserve.gov / FRED WALCL). No outcome value assigned (later stage).
Sources
Outcome evidence
The FOMC announced on Oct 29, 2025 that it would conclude balance-sheet reduction (end QT) effective Dec 1, 2025 — i.e., stop shrinking the balance sheet. This is the end of QT, not a resumption of net expansion / QE.
The Fed characterized post-QT operations as reserve-management purchases (rolling maturing MBS into T-bills to keep reserves ample) — explicitly distinguished from QE, which targets longer-term rates via longer-duration purchases. No QE-style asset-purchase program was launched in 2025.
Total Fed assets were ~$6.54 trillion in the week ending Dec 10, 2025 — flat/declining across 2025 (down from ~$8.9T in 2022 and still net-shrinking most of 2025), confirming no net balance-sheet expansion during the year.

Within roughly three months of the BTFP's March 2024 expiration, a notable banking/funding-stress episode occurs AND the Fed responds by cutting rates, tapering QT, or restarting QE.
Conjunctive criterion (banking/funding-stress episode AND Fed easing response). First conjunct FAILED: no notable banking/funding-stress episode followed the March 2024 BTFP expiration. The Fed did taper QT (May/June 2024), which superficially matches the 'taper QT' branch, but the required triggering crisis did not occur and the QT slowdown was independently planned — so the causal claim does not hold. No rate cut and no QE restart in the window. Both sides logged.

Outcome evidence
The BTFP expired March 11, 2024 with NO banking/funding-stress episode — no bank of meaningful size failed around the expiration; reporting noted the program wound down calmly and reserves stayed ample.
Fed did NOT cut rates in the ~3-month window (first cut was Sept 2024). It DID slow QT (Treasury runoff cap $60B→$25B/month, announced May 1, 2024, effective June), but as a pre-planned liquidity-management step, not a response to any BTFP-triggered crisis.
